Today's Safety Tip

Clean your microwave and fridge regularly. You can get sick from a dirty fridge or microwave.

I actually picked up some sort of crud over the weekend. I clean the fridge every month and give it a wipe if food happens to spoil inside.

The microwave...well...no one likes cleaning the microwave. I finally tackled it on Saturday and bleh. It was high school dirty, if you catch my drift.

My microwave gets cleaned about every 2 weeks. Put a solution of 1/2 c vinegar (white is cheapest) and 1/2 cup water into a microwavable cup (I use a pyrex measuring cup). Microwave on the highest setting for about 5 minutes. Once the cycle finishes, leave the door closed with the hot solution inside for another 5 minutes. The gunk should wipe clean pretty easily (I use a rag and the hot vinegar/water solution to clean).

I also clean the refrigerator about once a month and deep clean a couple of times a year. That chore got really much easier when I put it on the monthly chore list.

Covering your plate/bowl helps contain the spatter. Something as simple as another plate or paper towel will do. I'm looking into a specialized item (there are microwave plate covers for sale) and leaving in the microwave so people will use it. (Can you tell that I am the microwave cleaner here?) Also, our current microwave spatters a LOT more than our previous units, and I have no idea why.
