The Toys That Made Us

I can't even remember how I found out about this series, whether it popped up on Netflix or the MLP collector group that I'm on - but I watched one episode and I was hooked! I told every collector friend I knew about it and even if you don't collect toys, the show is an awesome nostalgia trip. The first four episodes are on Netflix - GI Joe, Star Wars, Barbie, MOTU - with the other four episodes - Hello Kitty, Star Trek, Transformers, Lego - to air in March. I can't wait!

Admittedly at first I thought TTTMU was going to be some lame, overly talky documentary because of the awful cartoon intro and song. Fortunately I overcame that in the first episode otherwise I would have missed such a great show. Tweaked for maximum nostalgia and trivia, each episode really goes into the history of the toys with interviews with collectors, designers, marketers and even accountants. The film present a really nice narrative for the toys and the people involved in bringing them to life or market with a lot of humour and some re-enactments. The story behind success is never simple and it was so cool to learn how copmanies struggled to come up with a winning concept...and even when they did, they sometimes lost it all!

I hope that there will be a season 2 so they can get around to My Little Pony. The FB page is constantly flooded with everyone's favourite toy requests, so we'll see!
