Lucky Penny Shop Presents...

Some time ago I stumbled across YouTuber Lucky Penny Shop...not sure how, but I'm always checking in to see what weird and wonderful things they're reviewing, which is mostly toys. Love their enthusiasm and demos, especially when they pull out older toys. Here's just one video from an oddball set of McDonald's toys made in 1993 used to condition young folks into accepting McJobs. All the toys seem rather weird in that they don't produce the actual product in any form - the French fry maker cuts bread up into strips, for example - but I guess someone deserves props for thinking up something like this. The burger maker is by far the strangest of the bunch - and watching it in action as the narrator makes a cereal, chocolate and peanut butter burger patty is oddly gross, fun and...unique!

huh... that is so weird!

Two YouTubers I like for toy commentary are Mike Mozart because he has such odd, old things sometimes, and Ashens because he is dry and British and funny. Ashens is truly my favorite since he adds old and knockoff handheld games and Poundland food (ick!).

Isn't it? It seems to me there would be a less complicated way of making the "meat" and it looks like a pain to clean. The chicken McNuggets in another video are made from bread, corn flakes and honey :-D

Mike Mozart is a hoot! I love him...should see what he's up to now. I haven't heard of Ashens, but I'll take a look. Thanks!

Main reason my mother didn't buy certain toys was she always took "ability to clean" into account; beg, plead, or whine, but Mom knows who get stuck with it.

Oh totally!! I remember I really had to beg and plead for markers and plasticine. I didn't have paint either growing up :-D

plasticine is one of the best toys you can give a child too! It doesn't try out and provides one with endless creativity and playtime

Truly! Mom just saw it as getting into the carpet and such. The dearth of art supplies I experienced as a child shows in my addiction to Michaels ;-)

ooh! I could get into this. I'll look them up, but feel free to add links :)

I think adults can really get into toys once in a while, like kids, and that's why some of the Japanese builder kits can remain popular.

Whoops, I hope I haven't led you down the path of frittering away a day on YouTube :-)

I just love toys, still. I love the toyness of some toys, if that makes sense. If I had the space, I would totally have a little Calico Critter town :-) Other times it is nostalgia - compared to some kids, we have very little in the way of toys. Other toys always looked they would never quite work. I watched the Lucky Penny review of the Snoopy snow cone maker, something I always wanted, and it was disappointing to see how much effort it took just to get a dixie cup full of ice!

Again, another toy in Japan was similar:

Oh, YOU would so not be responsible for that, me and cat videos are perfectly good at wasting time on our own. lol

I should explain that this is "kakigori" or Japanese "shaved ice", a treat that is common in the summer. This is a teeny-weeny version (bubblegum kind of toy) requiring oodles of patience, which the poster certainly has.

His silent videos are addictive.

How cosmic! I came across that channel before, for one of the jelly making kits. The local Asian supermarket has those, along with Reniment toys, although the selection is so small. Japan has the coolest stuff!

If you get a kick out of that -- and I thank you for sharing this -- you may enjoy the varieties of "kits", including a burger one, in Japan.

For a long time, I enjoyed watching this lovely woman do her kits while she lived in Japan (she is not a Japanese person though) and she continued this when she moved back to America. She also got sent food parcels from all over the world and it got rather interesting.

I felt she explained things well, had a nice voice & face, and was never annoying (although honest and never overly cutesy):
