This is mostly an informational post in case someone comes across it. I spent a ridiculous amount of time upgrading Lightroom and if I can save someone the frustration, it will be worth it!
If you don't have a lot of money or want to steer away from Adobe products, check out this list of Lightroom alternatives. People forget that Corel still exists and Aftershot Pro is their offering.
So, you have Lightroom 5 and a new camera, what do you?
Chances are, Lightroom 5 doesn't have the RAW camera profile for your new camera. You go to Adobe's website and get passed around from page to page that does its best to persuade you to get a Creative Cloud subscription. Or, you can hop onto Amazon and buy the full version of Lightroom 6 for $$. Man!
This forum post is out of date, but it was far more helpful than anything else I encountered. You can still purchase the 6 upgrade from Adobe, but you have to hit exactly the right spot:
1) Sign into your account
2) Search for PhotoShop Lightroom
3) On the purchase page, you can choose the standalone version or the upgrade from the dropdown menu. Purchase and install
4) You're not done - when it's installed, start Lightroom and check to see if your RAW files will import
5) Check Help > Updates to get the latest update to the upgrade and try importing again
It took me three hours to find and install the upgrade at the most - which is pretty unacceptable to me IMHO. This is the last version of standalone Lightroom that Adobe is making, so after that, I may try Capture One.
