I was old enough to be a NKOTB fan, but somehow they bypassed me--especially their Christmas album. My parents only listened to oldies radio, so perhaps it was a blessing. How does this go on for five minutes?

Ah well...happy holidays!

Do you love long blog posts about discovering high-curiosity, low-stakes nominal trivia? Do you thrill in meandering stories about small details that eventually end with new tidbits for your useless font of information? If so, read on, my beautiful nerds!

To begin, our old Samsung TV was so old it couldn't get new digital channels. We could only cast to it. By "old" I mean it somehow gave us a whopping 17 years of service!

The new TV came preloaded with all sorts of streaming services, which are perfect for long Canadian winters ;D One of the services is Plex, which delights me to no end. Sometimes you just want to unwind at night with a classic 80s Stephen J. Cannell 80s cop drama... aka Hunter.

Keep reading...I promise it's not too long )

And if don't want to read all that, perhaps you can still appreciate the lengths X-Files fans have gone to identify a background song and this epic Twitter thread about the search for the song :-)

We out for lunch at Earl's yesterday with my family for Thanksgiving. It was nice and nothing to clean up. Since we're still not 100% after having not-COVID, Mom wanted to make it easy on me. I still plan on making dinner for hubs and myself though.

Green salad
Craisin cranberry sauce
Stovetop Stuffing (hubs loves it)
Turkey breast (in the slow cooker)
Carrots
Creamer potatoes
Buns
Cherry Jell-o and whipped cream

I have this music playing today--I've longed to write something meaningful about Granny for some died. She passed away on the same day as we were married (different year) and her funeral was on my birthday. I feel so entwined with her life for that. Genealogy has helped me understand a lot about Granny's complex life and it's on days like this when I feel closest to her--putting on a big spread for family. Granny loved her home and it was always a place to be--when I think of Thanksgiving, I think of her wrestling a big turkey in and out of the oven for decades.

It's funny, when we moved into our house, I started receiving two magazines--one was a Kraft cooking magazine and the other was Chatelaine. I never knew who subscribed me to these, but I strongly sense it was Granny. There aren't a lot of things that one can pass down when there's such a big age gap--but a sense of home is certainly one of them <3

LOL I don't have any teenagers in my household to tell me what's new and cool, but today I discovered Ava Max. Wow! I was at Dollarama and let Google find this song because I hilariously misheard a word. I love the legacy pop vibes in her songs--one afternoon of listening to her music and I'm a fan!

Red Elvis is a biographical look at the life and death of Dean Reed who went from teen idol to Soviet superstar. Narrated by Dean's daughter, his interesting life met a suspicious end.

Dean Reed's Hollywood career was brief, but he became an international superstar during the height of the Cold War, living in Latin America and communist Europe. After going public about wanting to return home to the United States, Dean's life came to a mysterious end. Decades later, his daughter Ramona is determined to find out what really happened to him.

You can read the Wikipedia article, but I highly recommend listening to the podcast instead! Below are two samples of Reed's work. From all the comments you can see he still has a loyal Russian and Eastern European fanbase.

One of the fun things about living in Canada is that a lot of British culture makes its way over the pond, such as an 11 VHS tape set of Brideshead Revisited based on the novel by Evelyn Waugh. Mom and I watched it about 20 years ago. The whole soundtrack is on YouTube and it was delightful to hear it again.

Thanks for the memory [personal profile] sallymn!

I was reminded of this song by by Ingrid Michaelson recently. Most people probably remember it from a pivotal moment of S4 of Grey's Anatomy. I like the repetition of a simple line and the overall prettiness of the song. Every now and then I stop and thinking "All I can do is keep breathing" :-)

I heard this song a while back and went to find a version on YouTube that jived with me more than the solo performer. I forgot to paste the video here and naturally I can't find it again.

Anyhow, It Is Well With My Soul sounds best performed by a choir, IMHO, and there isn't a shortage on YouTube. The hymn was was composed by Philip Paul Bliss with lyrics by Horatio G. Spafford in 1876.

I loved Nashville when it was on the air. I think about this signature song a lot lately!

If you are of a certain age, chances are that your parents had Nana Mouskouri's Christmas album. Her voice is so beautiful and I was so moved to hear it recently. I haven't heard her Christmas album in decades, but I instantly recognized this classic, Kalanta.

I highly encourage you to check out her non-Christmas music as well :-)

We were watching the budgies barf and kiss and I commented that Will was a love machine. Will was always at the bottom of the pecking order. Now that it's just him and Tweety, he has a very captive audience. Tweety looked like he had to have coffee first but Will was ready for the love barf. He was squeaking, dipping and dancing in anticipation and I started singing Love Machine. You know, the song made famous by the Miracles:

And if you are of a younger generation, Wham!

I realized that after all these years I didn't actually know the lyrics to Love Machine, so I got a big laugh when I looked them up. They probably went right over my head as a kid anyway! They sound totally corny and written by a teenager but with the right vocalists, a hit was born! :-)

I just realized how many Hip songs are about water, or at least dangerous weather. No official video for this song, but it was always a favourite...Phantom Power is one of my favourite Hip albums, and it was mostly about weather.

Nautical Disaster...oof, 1990s videomaking!

AND OF COURSE...New Orleans Is Sinking. I have a ton of bootleg live versions - the Hip play a great live show and I regret missing them last year the Rotary fundraiser with 54-40. The "Killer Whale Tank" version is super righteous.

Gord Downie also got the water spot in this song featuring titans of socially conscious music, Midnight Oil...love this song...

Ah, there are two! The first is Heartbreak Hotel, which always gives me the shivers! But you can't beat Elvis' voice or the optimism of "If I Can Dream":

I hope to go to Graceland again some day. I was never a huge Elvis fan until I visited Elvis' home. There really is something about Graceland that leaves a person changed.
