This Old House
Feb. 7th, 2021 10:25 amWe're getting the jump on 2021's home improvement project. We started doing at least one project a year once our house approached 20. Now the our house is 25 years old. We'll have lived in it since 2003, which is hard to believe. Take care of a house and a house will take care of you.
Anyway, we're looking at a fence. It's something we have wanted for a long time. We found a great contractor and he humoured our newbie questions through a Zoom call. He asked why we didn't build a fence years ago when prices were lower. We couldn't always afford such things and I wasn't making enough money for a while after I was laid off in 2011 and then hubs was laid off in 2015. Dude, a fence was the least of our priorities!
But, he had a good point. Last year there was a lumber shortage and lumber prices were higher than normal. He foresees the same problem this year.
Alberta is notoriously dry and terrible for wood. The sun and wind just pounds wood. We thought about vinyl, but again, cold and hail! Wrought iron is expensive and will rust. All materials have their pros and cons, so we decided on an aluminum fence. Now we just have to pick out a design we like and see if it can be ordered.
