Oh man, the fifth Harry Potter book just went on and on, and then the closer I got to the end, the more compelled I was to finish it this morning and forget about vaccuuming :-D My only real complaint about it was the gamut of characters.

I really want to see The Golden Compass, but it's really getting panned on Rotten Tomatoes. I'm sure for those who enjoy fantasy movies it's a treat, maybe after LOTR and HP, all other fantasy movies seem like Dragonslayer to people ;-) I'm trying to avoid as much spoilerage as I can. I'm really eager to read the books, and not just because of the controversy...I remember seeing this book all the time when I worked at the library and it's funny it never piqued my interest thing (probably because no horses on the cover :-)). The local Catholic school board has removed the series from its shelves, although it hasn't been banned per se.

I'm dying to see it, but probably won't until next weekend. I'm tempted to read the print books myself; I already "read" the audiobooks and enjoyed them, and I'm always curious how the two versions compare. There aren't many books I've "read" both ways, primarily I've done that where I could only find an abridged audio version.

Isn't it hard to put down a book? Gotta be one of life's hardest tasks. I was never able to get into Harry Potter but hadn't tried real hard I suppose. I hadn't read LOTR until recently and am glad I did. The Golden Compass might be good just to see Nicole Kidmann as a baddie.

Hey on the movie website you get to find your animal personality match.....

Got the card and the adorable magnet today. Thanks!!!....... I have an acute weakness for fridge magnets......... First thing I did when I got my new fridge was not to put food in it but magnets on it!

Book 5 is my least favourite, it just goes on and on and on and Harry is so unlikeable! Book 6 is a bit better, and book 7 is very good.

I love how the books have been around for years and won all kinds of awards, but now that they made a movie the religious groups are up in arms. The books are anti-organized religion, but they promote a lot of deep thinking about ones own spirituality (if you choose to analyze the messages in the book anyway.)

The hilarious thing is that the anti-organized religion stuff doesn't really come in until books 2 and 3. The religious groups are up in arms because they think that people will see the movie, get curious, and then read the books, and we can't have that! *shakes head*

Anyway, they are a good read. I've read mixed things about the movie, but I haven't seen it yet to know. : )

So far I would have to agree, there's enough material for two books there. I guess if she didn't stick so rigidly to the story happening during the school year, a lot more could have been done. OTOH, I think it makes it interesting that Harry is so awkward and a little annoying in this book - otherwise he'd be like one of the Hardy Boys :-)

And I thought the same thing, afterwards! :) But I still think that JK could really have used an editor to trim that book down to about half.

So funny, I remember doing that quiz a while back and I got a hawk, I think, and this time around, I got a crow. Wonder if there's a budgie lurking in there somewhere :-D

I resisted reading HP for the longest time, I thought it was just a fad. Heh, I still have a shrinkwrapped set of LOTR, maybe in the new year I'll tackle it.

You're quite welcome for the card :-) Magnets are so addictive, aren't they?

Hehe, I skipped your posts about it because of potential spoilerage. I just noticed that you can get a print version containing all three books, so maybe I'll go that route.

LOL, I could forsee a whole HP series a la Sweet Valley High or something if JK wasn't wise enough to keep it under control :-D

I ordered the Omnibus edition of all three books today, I can't wait now.

The attitude that curiosity will lead to action always bugs me, like "Oh no, teenagers are talking about sex, that must mean they're doing it!". There's nothing worse than forgetting that people can think for themselves, and that includes young people too.

Yea, although in some cases I don't think it's that they forget that people can think for themselves, it's that they don't want people to. : / Which is even worse.
