All aboard for technology run amuck!
Sep. 28th, 2008 09:44 pmOf all the local public services, the public library is the biggest bang for the buck - nowhere else can you access books, music, DVDs, educational software and magazines and more for just $12 a year. And even though the occasional grumpy letter to the editor crops up about the DVDs, I'm so glad that the library is so forward thinking. Yes, films are a part of the breadth of human knowledge and culture, and the library really needs to attract all the patrons it can. I was hoping to find more Britcoms after returning season 3 of Waiting for God when Westworld literally jumped out at me.
Given how cheesy (and groovy) most science fiction films from the 70s are (Logan's Run, ahem ahem) we were amazed how well done Westworld was. It is a little dated, but the strong direction and deliberate staging of almost every scene overcame this. And we couldn't help but notice how Yul Brenner as the Gunslinger seemed to be the inspiration for The Terminator - Yul Brenner makes just as good a robot as Arnie :-)
