I spent way too much time last night poring over Wishbook Web, which has scans of department store Christmas catalogs. There's even an Eaton's one, which impresses me - maybe they'll have a Woodward's one? Those last two are defunct Canadian department stores. What fond memories they brought back - I remember clipping out all the Star Wars toys I wanted when I was four or so - but this must have freaked Mom out, because I got a pile of Strawberry Shortcakes instead. Was it so wrong for a little girl to like Star Wars so much? *sniff*. I didn't find the particular toy I was looking for last night, but another toy caught my eye, a looming craft kit.

I had one of these little round looms for doll clothes, but the instructions flummoxed both me and my very knitty Mom. Now of course, I'm all about the Knifty Knitter and would know how to use this. It took some real Google-fu to find one for sale that wasn't too expensive. I'm sure mine is kicking around in a box of junk somewhere, but it's just easier to buy one than poke around in crawlspaces :-)

I took a gander at eBay, and had my eye on a hexagon and octagon lap loom, but shipping to Canada is too expensive. I hope someone on Freecycle has one they don't want. I can just imagine all the cool stuff I would whip up with those! These Clover square looms look quite exciting, but they're not listed for sale on their US site. Maybe I'll get a butterfly loom instead. Or I could put the Dremel to use and make my own. Oh yeah, I found out Mom was hip to plastic bag yarn, so there's always making a little loom out of yogurt cups too!

Ah, such fun! I love browsing through these sorts of things! I remember some of them very well, and I just wish I still had them. I've got pretty much all of the Wishbooks since 1998, but not the ones prior to that. I'm particularly interested in the ones from the 1970's and 1980's, since those were my childhood years. :)

When I was in middle-school, my art-teacher taught us weaving on card-board looms. It was so much fun! All we did was take a rectangle of heavy-duty cardboard and cut notches in it. Then we wove the yarn back and forth across the length of the loom, around the notches, and made a shuttle out of a piece of cardboard, and voila!
