Usually we focus on one annual reno project a year, but we got off to a late start because we didn't know what we wanted and hubs was travelling for work. We finally decided to look into new siding. Roofs and siding are two matters that concern Calgarians greatly because we get fierce, ridiculous summer hailstorms and, on more than one occasion, wicked wind storms. It was a 2011 wind storm that netted us a new roof in 2012 IIRC.

So, being on a corner lot in a windy part of town, our house takes a beating more than most houses. We have vinyl siding that's showing it's age and not looking great. We were wowed by James Hardie siding, which is durable, should last 50 years and can take a beating. It seems like it isn't cheap though. The estimator suggested we might also want to replace windows at the same time, as it will make the siding installation easier. Now things are really getting expensive.

It's not a decision we'll rush into, but we quickly realized we don't know enough about siding. At the same time, the thought of changing the colour of the house is kind of neat. We may have to table it for next year.

Sounds like a good idea to keep up on replacing your roof and siding especially with the weather there. I’ve heard horror stories about people not replacing roofs and them leaking all over everything and causing catastrophes.
