Witch's Wake & Arden
Dec. 18th, 2007 09:11 pmI was all ready to thrash Witch's Wake, one of the premium modules for NWN for its disappointing, sudden ending, when a little Googling revealed that it was part of an idea to produce episodic content for NWN. I guess either the business model didn't work or the developers just didn't get around to finishing it (particularly now that NWN2 is out). Doesn't look like the mod community tried to take up the reins either. This would explain why another module has no real ending, but at least things were wrapped up to some degree. The story is very intriguing and a really good premise, which is why it was such a letdown/
Arden, on the other hand, was featured on Slashdot. I wasn't able to join the multiplayer game, but I did download the offline version and it's pretty good, although some essential game design is missing to make the game interesting for a long period of time. For example, premise, things to loot, animals to talk to, random encounters, caves, etc all seem to be missing. Once you're out of the city, there's just vast areas of terrain with friendly animals :-) Even though Morrowind had one traversing vast expanses, there was always something to do between point A and B. There's a very interesting auction component for selling of raw materials, but it doesn't seem to work offline. I think if they had stuck to a Shakespeare play with lots of the supernatural in it, like Macbeth, that would have made a very cool game!
