Zip has been slow to send us new movies lately and the second last one was so very disappointing. Ghost Town couldn't have been in theatres long because I don't remember it, and I think anything with Ricky Gervais in it would have stuck in my memory. I had the strong feeling after watching it that it was written for another actor, maybe Adam Sandler. Gervais is far too restrained as the misanthropic Dr. Pincus (compare his role as a dentist in Louis CK's show) and didn't have much chemistry with Greg Kinnear or Tea Leoni. The editing was choppy in the last half and doesn't flow as well as the first half. It's a very predictable movie and there's too much time between the jokes. Dreadfully slow and dull anyway.
Outland was much better. I remember watching part of this space western starring Sean Connery when I was a child. It has the same sort of feel as Aliens and is of the same vintage. The main problem with the movie was the poor transfer to DVD. It was like watching a video dub which was distracting. Anyhow, Sean Connery, as W.T. O'Neil, finds himself the only honest cop on a mining operation on Io. It has a nice blend of future/real life for 1981 and closely mirrors life on an oil rig. They could so remake this, and apparently there was a plan to do so in 2009. Naturally I think it would be awesome with Matt Damon or Vin Diesel ^-^
