It's always weird when the movies we watch settle into a theme, and that happens to be cars. And oh, we love cars. But we sure didn't love Corvette Summer, which is far more like Corvette Bummer. It stars Mark Hamill and Annie Potts and character actor Eugene Roche. Corvette Summer would be a fairly decent movie if it wasn't filmed so cheaply and didn't star Hamill trying to play a teenager at the age of 27! His acting is awkward and embarrassing, and he just doesn't channel 1970s shop kid at all. Annie Potts is much better, but her role as a hooker with a heart of gold and a tricked out shaggin' wagon is so problematic I don't even know where to begin. He builds a custom Corvette in shop class - when it gets stolen, he hitchhikes all the way to Las Vegas to retrieve it.

Last night we watched Ronin, which was as twisty as the narrow French streets it took place in - it could easily be called Fast & Furious France. It looks a little dated since it's from 1998, but Robert DeNiro is awesome as Sam, an ex CIA agent who is recruited into a crew to heist a mysterious suitcase (it's always a mysterious suitcase!). Between trying to figure out who can be trusted and who wants the briefcase, there are three or four awesome car chases. If it was made today, it would be far more explodier, but it was just nice to be able to see the action, instead of blurs and flames.

We also watched the first Transformers movie with friends recently. I regret not seeing this on the big screen because it would have been a-m-a-z-i-n-g. At the same time, I can't help that boy toys get the big screen treatment while girl toys get the direct to DVD bin. I'm not counting the Equestria Girls movie. Hey Hasbro, I would be all up for a live action Jem movie while we're pulling things out of the 80s toybox! Anyway...I had assumed from reviews that the movie was a total turkey due to Shia LaBeouf, but he really wasn't that bad, and there were lots of funny parts. As a wrench wench, Megan Fox is certainly no Michelle Rodriguez and it's too bad that she's just a prop :\

Lastly, and we did watch this one a while back, there's Hot Rods to Hell, which sounds awesome and bad ass, but is just hilariously bad. It was originally meant to be filmed in 1957, but was delayed by ten years. As such, it reeks of being an old person's idea of what "those young people are up to nowadays". I put it on our Zip list because it starred Dana Andrews, who starred in one of my favourite Old Time Radio shows, I Was a Communist for the FBI. Some young people in a red Corvette terrorize the Phillips family in the southwestern US and eventually the young people are taught a lesson by The Man. My favourite part of this movie was how every time the family encountered danger, everyone grabbed onto Dad as he was driving. So, so bad! But in the good way, not the Corvette Summer way.
