Cronometer

My friend recommended this food tracking app to me and I'm really pleased with it after a week. It's available for iOS and Android and there's even a web version. Lately I wanted to make sure that I was getting all the nutrients I needed, so I was willing to give it a try.

It has some mixed reviews. For starters, it is very US-centric and nutrition amounts might come from the USDA. If you're not American, a lot of products can't be scanned by barcode and you might have to enter them manually. Copying or moving items to another day is a little fussy as well as deleting an item. I expected that one would be able to long press on an item to get a menu, but you have to go into the settings part to do that. You can sign up for this one with a throwaway email if you want.

I have used the SparkPeople and MyFitnessPal apps in the past and they were OK. The thing I like about Cronometer is that they actually verify when a new food is encountered. It's an easy process to submit photos of the nutrition facts and label. You can even ask to be notified when the food is added to the database. A lot of user entered data is atrocious, which made MyFitnessPal a bit of a minefield. However, all food tracking is prone to error, whether it's done manually by hand (in the old days of Weight Watchers) or the quality of food eaten.

It was a little surprising to learn where I was deficient and I was able to buy the right supplements or food during the next grocery trip.
