New Year's Movierama

calzephyrWe rented a pile of DVDs to see the old year out.
Zardoz - We've been wanting to watch this one forever! We actually taped it off Scream, but the tape ran out about 15 minutes short of the ending :-( A remake of this movie would be really good - it had some good ideas about "haves" and "have nots", but it's waaaaaaay too trippy with that 70s style. Plus it's hard to take seriously because it was so unintentionally funny. The giant flying head at the beginning set me off and the sight of Sean Connery in bright orange briefs sustained the giggles.
Tokyo Drift - I liked the first The Fast and The Furious movie, but I could only watch about 15 minutes of this one before I went off to do something else. Hubs liked it lots!
The Final Cut - This "future is now" movie starred Robin Williams and Mira Sorvino. A lot of IMDb users didn't like the movie, but maybe they were expecting something more futuristic. It was very suspenseful but purposely slow paced. It had a nice atmosphere and the hardwood laptop was a nice touch :-) The idea is that people can buy something called a Zoe implant, which records their entire life from their point of view. When a person dies, the chip is slogged through by people known as "cutters" and assembled into a "rememory" at the funeral. The concepts of privacy and memory are really good too.
The Howling - If you liked Gremlins and even Pirhana, you can't go wrong with The Howling. A good blend of suspense, horror and humour (particularly during the credits). It's right up there with An American Werewolf in London.
Brotherhood of the Wolf - When this movie first came out, I thought it was some sort of old fashioned werewolf story :-D Not so! Instead it turned out to be a lush, historical mystery thriller as a naturalist, Grégoire de Fronsac, and his Iroquois companion, Mani, investigate strange killings in the French countryside. If you liked The Name of the Rose, you'll probably like this one, despite a lot of fantastical liberties :-D I think this movie could have been a tad shorter as well - it seemed to go on a little long.
