[livejournal.com profile] taeha is responsible for this :-D I remember seeing Perler beads way back when I worked at Lewiscraft as a teenager. It never really caught my attention because it was always relegated to the colourful aisle of kids crafts. Mind you, the pegboards weren't too interesting and neither was the packaging. It's like, ooh, a heart! ooh, a rainbow hexagon! They made it look seriously unexciting!

Anyway, this fabulous Flickr gallery proves what amazing things can be done with them. I'm very impressed. When I went to Michael's today, I stopped by the kids aisle and found a kit with a pony on the front just to try it out. I could see doing more like this. It was pretty easy, although I had to find an adult (my husband) to do the ironing. At 29, I don't know how to use an iron :-D

I can see making more ponies...I love cross-stitch with all my heart, but for the life of me, I just can't complete a project for some reason. I think this would be a good idea to use some of my designs with.

Thanks :-) I wasn't sure how it would come out. The flip slide is almost completely flat...we weren't sure if 20 seconds was long enough.

You're not too far off there...they have quite the colour palette (http://www.koolstuff4kids.com/perler-beads.html), so a picture might have paint by number feel to it. I think I might get the big square pegboard off of eBay and some horsey colours and see what happens.

Ooh, I remember doing Perler beads! They're so fun, but I could never figure out what to do with the end result. You can only have so many coasters before it gets a bit silly. :)

LOL, how very true! I have some smaller x-stitch horse designs I made, and I think they would be good as magnets. They probably would be too heavy for pins. Hmmm! At least the Christmas tree ones can be hung on the tree, but I can't imagine anyone buying them at craft sales.

I did Google, and it looks like you can put them together in 3D designs, such as this one:

I guess I could always make lots of ponies and string them together as a mobile or something.

That's so cool!! Nice work.
Because of their pixel-like quality, any pixel art or sprites would translate well to perler!

Thanks! I have a yellow Appaloosa all lined up, hopefully we won't overiron it like the pinto :-)

I'm pretty excited. I'm thinking I could also lace the beads together and not have to worry about melting them. Even with making layers and 3D objects...what little I found on the web is pretty inspiring!
