I'm really trying hard, but I don't think I can get through The Red Tent by Anita Daimant. We had a book swap at work last November and I borrowed this book along with It Happened in Chicago.

One co-worker enthusiastically gave me her copy of Naomi Klein's No Logo for keeps, which I read in December. There wasn't much new about No Logo that a hackey sack playing Greenpeace t-shirt wearing hippie like myself didn't know already, but it was sort of a catalog of events like the McLibel suit, and a very good analysis of how powerless consumers are. It was published in 2000 and the tone is so late 90s. It makes me nostalgic for 1998. Anyway. the tone of that book was a little too "hit me over the head" for my co-worker. The one part I really liked, and would have liked to have seen more of, was this one part where she writes about being fascinated as a child by the plasticness of things. For example, when driving through the Rockies, she can't wait to hit "civilized" parts instead of the more natural areas. The plasticness represents all the things her family isn't; clean and perfect, free of conflict. Obviously she grew out of that phase.

The Red Tent is a retelling of the story of Laban's daughters as well as that of Dinah. I'm not sure why, but I want to call it "Bible Clan of the Cave Bear" even though I haven't read Clan of the Cave Bears. Daimant goes into extreme detail about the way the people lived. There's also many lusty parts, and I'm only in Chapter 3! I think I will be giving it back to the co-worker I borrowed it from. I'm just not getting into the story or style. The lusty parts actually remind me of the men's westerns we used to giggle over in the backroom of the library. Stuff like "He thrust his sword into her mound of love". Well, it's not quite like that, but that's what it reminds me of :-)

I'm not sure where my copy of Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer disappeared to, but I was glad to see it again. I also enjoyed Into Thin Air. I find the story of Chris McCandless fascinating because I often wonder how people manage to live transient lives. It's sad too, because his death was preventable to a certain degree. Apparently it's going to be made into a movie too.
