I finally got around to scraping the inch thick, Cool Whip covered chocolate goop masquerading as a dessert into the garbage. Although it looked like a prettied up cow pie, there was no denying it was tasty. But after two weeks, the ingredients were starting to seperate out and I didn't have the time all week to bid it a proper farewell until today.

It's weird to have two desserts fail so spectacularly. It's not that they failed completely - they were still edible to some extent - it's just that they really weren't up to being served to guests.

I picked the two because they contained similar ingredients and they seemed easy.

The first one was Robin Hood's Chocolate Toffee Bites, which suspiciously look like a something my mom makes called "Shortie Bars" but with pecans. It was pretty much downhill after the first step:

Mix flour, sugar and butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Mixture will be ery dry. Press into prepared pan. Sprinkle pecans evenly over mixture.

My mix didn't resemble course crumbs and in hindsight, I probably should have used a pastry cutter. When I pressed it down into the pan, it was more powdery than pressable. Now that I re-read the recipe, I botched it at almost every step. What resulted was edible and chocolate covered, but not square, toffeeish or bite sized. I broke it up into big chunks and put it in the freezer. It'll go great with ice cream :-)

The second recipe was Kraft's Decadent Triple Layer Dessert. I discovered it was not easy to spread the layers evenly. Even if it doesn't come out picture perfect, I thought, it'll still be good. Then, when I was scooping the pudding layer on, I dropped the mixing bowl right in the middle of the pan. I said something very unladylike and the boom of the mixing bowl caused my husband to come running. A few tears rolled down my cheeks. I gamely glopped on the rest of the layers and put to rest in the fridge. What a morning that was!
