New Year, New Recipes
Jan. 2nd, 2008 09:42 amHappy new year peeps! I go back to work tomorrow and I'm so sad. The fids have really enjoyed me being home, and I have enjoyed being home and cooking! It's been such a rare thing to be able to cook lately. I've got the crockpot and dutch oven going and my kitchen smells so good because...
I'm making Havana Chili in the dutch oven. This intriguing chili recipe calls for cinnamon and raisins, and I can tell you that it's going to be good! It will be for dinner tomorrow.
The crockpot is going to be occupied for another seven hours with Italian steaks with polenta. The polenta is added in the last 20 minutes of cooking. I bought some cheap little steaks instead of beef roast - I don't have the knives or urge to cut up raw meat. I'm going to sautee some mushrooms as well later on.
I also made Creamy Comforting Paprikash yesterday, although mine wasn't creamy because I forgot to buy sour cream, and there's no way I'm paying $4 for a little tub at the 7-11 :-) I made this in the crockpot, and when I make it again I would double up on the spices or add them last and go easier on the onions :-) I would also cut down the cooking time - about 4 hours on low is enough for pork cubes. I might also try browning the pork and onions first.
Speaking of crockpots, McCains has something called 'Slow Cooker Solutions' which is no doubt a response to Hamburger Helper's Slow Cooker Helper. Doesn't look like they taste very good according to the interwebs. They also cost about $7-9, and you can buy fresher ingredients for about the same or less. I won't try it, but I guess if it lures more people to the cult of the crockpot, that's a good thing :-)
