The quarterly book fair came to Bow Valley Square the other week, and oh yes, I was there! Most of the books were general interest, but The Daring Book for Girls
. I had heard of The Dangerous Book for Boys, and after a brief flip-through, I was sold. It's an enjoyable book for both genders and all ages, and while I wouldn't mind seeing a combined mega-volume, sometimes boys and girls stick pretty hard to gender roles despite how much adults would like them to be gender neutral. There's no denying the boys and girls like things they can call their own though! I don't think there is anything from keeping both genders from enjoying either book.
It's packed with interesting stories about famous women, articles for living (how to change a tire, how to negotiate a salary), science and nature, crafts, outdoor activities, and traditional school yard rhymes and games. That last one was the most interesting to me because of regional variations.
Some of the Amazon reviewers are horrified that it includes an article on palm reading and Bloody Mary as a slumber party game, but really, it's an over-reaction. What children like is often vastly different from adults, naturally, and I really doubt Bloody Mary is going to lead a child into the occult.
