I'm glad they were able to identify him. I hope that non-sinister explanations are found for the other feet. In the meantime, it certainly gives plenty of fodder for plot ideas!
I wonder if the rate of foot discovery really is all that unusual, or if just for some reason the press are enjoying reporting it so we think it's unusual.
I have thought about that - it's kind of a man bites dog. My friend taeha answered my own question about it - It's not at all common for bodies to wash ashore on the BC coast, but it happens. Anywhere there is a large body of water, there is some idiot in his boat drinking and fishing, who falls out and drowns. We had a body wash up on the lake shore in front of our house (yes, our beach) when I was a little kid. Fortunately my Dad discovered it, and while the police, coroner, etc came, my parents kept me inside and occupied and I never knew about it until they told me later.
My understanding is that finding detached body parts isn't all that unusual as the joints separate as the body decays and there's no connective tissue to hold it together. I guess what's weird is that they've all been the same foot in the same type of shoe. It probably is just coincidence, but coincidences don't make for very exciting news.
