Success at last with the Sew Easy machine

Knitting machines intrigue me as much as this guy, so I couldn't resist buying this machine (with coupon) back in the fall. I didn't have much time to try practicing with it, and I finally made a little scarf today.
The main problem is that the machine drops stitches like no tomorrow, it was so easy to be frustrated with it. Even with the best tension control, the first few inches will be a total disaster. The trick seems to be to take a large needle and when the problem area is about four stitches away from the yarn feeder to pull the loop and make sure it goes through. It takes a few rows to see how successful this is. The machine also can't take bulky wool - I have used sportweight and baby wool with it and it does make a fine knit. The tubes are about 3" wide. I gave panel knitting a try, but I can't see making anything out of the panels because they're about 5" wide. This same company also makes a bigger adult version that isn't made from sparkly purple plastic :-D
I picked up my loom from a Freecycler yesterday and was I surprised (in a good way). It's a handmade loom made from one piece of wood and looks just like the one here. I'm going to see if I can make more than just place mats with this ;-)
