calzephyrI'm not embarrassed to say that I like YA books (in fact, there's an LJ community for them!) and I thoroughly enjoyed the sequel to Evernight by Claudia Gray. Now to wait until spring for the third book, Hourglass. The series further distinguishes itself from other vampire books by building up more of a fantasy flavor and more about the characters and history of Evernight Academy are revealed. However, Gray holds back just enough to keep the reader wanting more. She introduces another twisty element of Bianca's background that's very interesting.
Stargazer doesn't take itself too seriously either and I found it quite funny. The vampire driving lesson had me howling. Ranulf, the medieval vampire, is probably my favourite as he wonders what spirits enchant material objects. I like the underlying messages about choice and judging others as well that are not overly preachy.
