It's time for some overdue love for our Breville Keurig coffee maker, or rather, fancy hot water dispenser. I bought it as a birthday gift for my husband, but I find I'm using it a lot (simply because he's not a big coffee drinker...but likes the coffees...it's a bit complicated). It can dispense up to 1.5 cups of boiling water *like that* and you can use your own tea or coffee with it besides the single serving cups. The cups can be recycled, so I didn't feel too eco-guilty about buying it.

I find that it's perfect for oatmeal and making Jell-o - it's like oatmeal turns out tastier and fluffier. I put away the regular kettle because it's been gathering dust since February. It's one of the few appliances out there that fit the "world of tomorrow" - it's shiny and swift and oddly rewarding. Plus it just plain works - fill the resevoir, pop in a cup and presto! The cups are surprisingly good value - I can easily get four cups of tea or two coffees out of a single cup. I just discovered today that it can do ramen as well. Man, I just love this thing - it's one of the few appliances I have found that truly makes life easier and does what it says.

Oatmeal? That must be instant oatmeal... Not the 3 minute rolled-oats stuff that I buy... but intriguing! You see, we have one at work. A couple of years back I won a $90 jackpot at work (fund-raising raffle) and I put that money into a Keurig as a solution to our coffee problem. The k-cups fit into our vending machine, thus no one helps themselves to the coffee without paying. (Milk and sugar management is another problem.) After trying several Van Houtte k-cups, now we just get French Vanilla and Sumatra Mandheling. But I don't find them to be of good value. We only make like at most 30ยข per coffee (we resell each k-cup for a dollar).

Yup - instant oatmeal all the way :-D

My husband's workplace has one as well and they sell the cups for 50 cents...I forget what ours work out to be from the local supplier. It's handy because at my workplace, we have the problem where the last person doesn't brew a new carafe, and it doesn't get cleaned as often either (eek!). I wish hotels would install them - you never know where the filter basket has been :-D

I'm kind of tempted to get one. I LOOOOOOOOOVE coffee (as you well know! lol). Which model do you have? How much was it?

That's extra awesome that you can use it for other things besides coffee and tea, as well!

We have the shiny Breville one (there's a Cuisinart one too) and I think it was about $297 at Bed Bath and Beyond (Home Outfitters was considerably more expensive) but any of the models are pretty good - they come with different sized reservoirs depending on what you need.

Next time you come over I would be happy to show it off!

With all the single cup brewers out there, I was concerned about buying one where the cups or pods or whatever would become hard to find, so the use your own was important. I hate being locked into a platform :-D
