Cut for spoilers!

Star Trek is such a no-brainer in our geeky household; I actually prefer Star Trek over Star Wars, classic Trek over the newer series. The newer series just seem so much more touchy feely and less action oriented, and the characters were not that compelling IMHO.

I tried to read as little as possible about Into Darkness because I didn't want spoilers or get bogged down in nitpicking. After the movie, I only allowed myself to read one forum post about it on MetaFilter and this awesome io9 article.

My bottom line - an AMAZING movie! It had a really strong beginning and fast paced plot until...the end. Or one of many ends. Skyfall had this problem as well - just as you mentally set yourself up for the ending (and thinking, ah, can go pee soon!), it turns out that it's not the ending. It really annoys me because there's only so much twists you can milk out of an ending before it becomes ridiculous. Save these great ideas for another movie!

The other annoying thing was the "high school in space" at the beginning. It was so tiresome and I'm glad it was fairly brief. It's too bad that the movie is not a series because one of the things that would help is if the actors could build more of a rapport with the audience and each other. Wasn't too thrilled about Khan being whitewashed, but some theorize it could be a nom de guerre instead. Benedict Cumberbatch was so wonderfully creepy, it's too bad that they couldn't make up a whole new villian just for him. Peter Weller was also a surprise. All in all it was better than I hoped for and very enjoyable. I would even see it again because it went by in such a rush.

The one thing I want to know though - why do female crew members wear mini dresses? Are pants not an option? I dunno...it just seemed too much of a throw back to the original series. When the ship is rocking and spinning, you're going to get your knees scraped ;-)

Heh, useful attire/hair is a pet peeve of mine in sci-fi/action films. Surprisingly it didn't bother me in ST:ID though, probably b/c I'm just so used to seeing it, and the women were barely in any fight scenes (which is a problem in and of itself), only Uhura on the Klingon planet, and she barely even pulled out a gun.

There was a Dr. Who episode this season where a woman who was about to get into a fight actually did up her hair first, and I just clapped in glee. :-D

Oh man, that's me too! Every time I watch a cop show or something, it's like, that long hair is going to be a problem!

The fibre geek in me wondered if the uniforms were made out of natural fibres. Because the last you want when the ship is on fire is have the clothing melt to your skin.

That's what I kind of liked about FF6 - the women were allowed to kick butt! It was awesome. IIRC, one of the actresses is an MMA fighter.

Yeah, I'd heard about that actress/MMA fighter elsewhere. When watching the trailers for it though, I just kept thinking "Huh, men get to drive and shoot guns, while women have cat fights. Well, at least they're authentic-looking cat fights."

There was more than just the cat fight :-) Gisele rides a motorcycle and tries to disable the plane by launching a harpoon, and earlier Gisele and Riley (the MMA fighter...looked it up) literally squeeze the location of the main baddie out of a minion.

I can't remember quite how one of the female baddies dies...but it's while she's driving a car.

The film just dances around the edge of the damsel in distress though...and gracefully backs away. Once the female character is rescued, she wastes no time swinging a pipe at baddies. There are actually several tropes that they just barely touch and sidestep so they don't end up being complete cliches, which I thought was really thoughtful.

Also, they gave Letty a sweet, sweet ride - a Jensen Interceptor! British on the outside, all American on the inside. I'm probably reading more into it, but that seems like a nice touch - since Letty's interior is more than the exterior (no pun intended).

BTW, do you have any interest in seeing this movie, because I can totally spoil one of the bad ass lines Letty gets :-D

Nope, no interest at all. Go right ahead. :)

All rightey then! When the one of the baddies questions Letty's loyalty to her new crew, she says to him:

Klaus, aren't you team muscle? Don't make me go over there and make you team pussy.

This is why I like how they treated the character - she doesn't really need rescuing and Dom doesn't really go after her in that "I must get my woman!" way. If anything, it's the chief baddie, Owen Shaw, who treats her like a possession. Dom just happens to catch her when she goes flying through the air on the bridge stunt :-D
