Star Trek: Into Darkness
May. 29th, 2013 06:46 pmCut for spoilers!
Star Trek is such a no-brainer in our geeky household; I actually prefer Star Trek over Star Wars, classic Trek over the newer series. The newer series just seem so much more touchy feely and less action oriented, and the characters were not that compelling IMHO.
I tried to read as little as possible about Into Darkness because I didn't want spoilers or get bogged down in nitpicking. After the movie, I only allowed myself to read one forum post about it on MetaFilter and this awesome io9 article.
My bottom line - an AMAZING movie! It had a really strong beginning and fast paced plot until...the end. Or one of many ends. Skyfall had this problem as well - just as you mentally set yourself up for the ending (and thinking, ah, can go pee soon!), it turns out that it's not the ending. It really annoys me because there's only so much twists you can milk out of an ending before it becomes ridiculous. Save these great ideas for another movie!
The other annoying thing was the "high school in space" at the beginning. It was so tiresome and I'm glad it was fairly brief. It's too bad that the movie is not a series because one of the things that would help is if the actors could build more of a rapport with the audience and each other. Wasn't too thrilled about Khan being whitewashed, but some theorize it could be a nom de guerre instead. Benedict Cumberbatch was so wonderfully creepy, it's too bad that they couldn't make up a whole new villian just for him. Peter Weller was also a surprise. All in all it was better than I hoped for and very enjoyable. I would even see it again because it went by in such a rush.
The one thing I want to know though - why do female crew members wear mini dresses? Are pants not an option? I dunno...it just seemed too much of a throw back to the original series. When the ship is rocking and spinning, you're going to get your knees scraped ;-)

This is why I like how they treated the character - she doesn't really need rescuing and Dom doesn't really go after her in that "I must get my woman!" way. If anything, it's the chief baddie, Owen Shaw, who treats her like a possession. Dom just happens to catch her when she goes flying through the air on the bridge stunt :-D
