September was just such a dreadful month. Usually prairie cities are some of the sunniest in Canada and we always enjoy a final burst of summer - but it feels like we had four or five sunny days all month. The last really long lasting sunny day was September 25 and fortunately the handyman was able to finish painting the exterior trim. It looks fantastic and I have to get a before photo from him. It might be a while before I can get a decent after photo given the stretches of overcast skies and light drizzle.

We really lucked out the handyman and I would hire him again. He really has a lot of expertise and a good idea for problems. It seems like the way my FIL built the garage is wrong - a stub wall should have been built to reinforce the bottom - which means all my FIL's good intentions won't last as long as he might have hoped. I think it was after the garage that we decided not to let my FIL do any more renos - he knew enough to do them OK, but...I became more concerned about him injuring himself.

I'm annoyed that the company that came out to check our foundation for cracks in summer didn’t recommend replacing the parging. It's too late to repair the horizontal crack, which now has a vertical crack, until next year. I squeezed some outdoor silicone in the cracks and crossed my fingers.

We hoped to go to the home and garden show a few weekends ago, but it was a busy weekend and I had a cold and sore throat. It would have been nice to see what's available and do some legwork before next year. Our biggest problem is that we don't reasonably know what things cost. New windows for the house would be about $12-13K. Our home wishlist includes a fence, a new deck, new parging, new deck/sunroom, new windows, new window treatments, new lino...it never really ends when you have a house!
