I was just remarking to hubs that I didn't have any time over the holidays to play point and click mystery games, but back pain from sewing woke me up early. The trouble with Big Fish Games is that they have frequent sales, you buy a bunch and then never get around to playing them!

Some time ago I bought one of the games in the popular Awakening series only to find that the last update to the game was in 2015. I didn't realize this when I fired it up. Ye gods! I thought, what a clunky and awful attempt at making a mobile game!!!.

My instincts were not far off. It was released in 2013 and BFG pulled the plug on it a couple of years later. It doesn't look look like you can currently purchase the game.

The game features the same lovely art and music as the rest of the Awakening games. As steward, you're charged with rebuilding the kingdom while Queen Sophia is away. This is a fairly standard plot that is strung together by the appearance of a mysterious cloaked figure. You earn money and building resources to upgrade village buildings, repair the castle or buy energy for yourself. You gather resources by completing quests for hidden objects on different maps throughout the kingdom.

In some regards, this is a very clever but weighty system wrapped in a cluttered interface. You can (could?) spend actual money on these resources, energy or gems to complete objectives faster. It looks like users were able to friend each other and run auctions for extra resources.

The game was released for mobile and desktop, but it's easy to see where the game's design can be a big turn off. I played on a PC for an hour and I'm not sure I'll devote more time to this game :-D There are countless pop ups, bobbing arrows and, quite frankly, too much reading. There's no way the developers could have known in 2012 or 2013 that these sorts of games needed the right touch. Just the right amount of text, a simplified interface and simple objectives are what make a successful mobile game these days.

Sounds a little like the "Renovate Relocate" game I played a while back. No real worries about a villain or a mystery, but it took me a couple years to finish since it didn't have much story involved. It was more just a puzzle here and a puzzle there. I liked it for that reason but it didn't keep me glued. Neat to see another game commentary up!
