I have to admit that what sold me on Awakening: The Dreamless Castle was the screenshot of the princess and unicorn statue. Eeee! Unicorns! How could I resist? The game seemed to be getting good reviews and while I found game play was short - I finished it in about five hours - it was quite enchanting. The lush graphics, intriguing puzzles and fantasy storyline made this a pleasant change from crime based HOGs. It's not really a HOG either - I think there were four or five hidden object screens. The other puzzles were pretty classic - memory matching, find the matching pair, slider puzzles, etc.
In the game, Princess Sophia is a pretty brunette (yay!) princess who has been asleep for 100 years. She wakes up in a castle and discovers that all the humans have disappeared. She journeys through the castle and with the help of some nice goblins and a fairy, finds out who she is and what she must do. I was disappointed that the story wasn't solved by the end of the game and that there was no unicorn either except for the statue. I was afraid that the sequel wouldn't show up.
Happily, and don't fairy tales deserve happy endings, the sequel did show up in time for Christmas 2010. Awakening: Moonfell Wood sees Sophia finding out why the humans left the realm as she explores a forest. This game also took me about five hours to play and I had to peek at the walkthrough a couple of times :-) The first two chapters were quite challenging. If anything, the later chapters relied too much on rebuilding broken statues or pottery for puzzles, but it was still good. The music is so pleasant in these games that it's a nice relaxing experience. I guess I'll have to wait patiently for the third installment! Maybe Sophia will find her family and the unicorn will show up!
