Trust me, I'm not bingeing all this while working from home. I'm just behind on logging Netflix shows. It was really surprising to see nine seasons of the best Forensic Files episodes show up. I didn't realize that it ran from 1996 to 2011 nor that the narrator was Peter Thomas, who also voiced Nova and Nature. There is something admittedly soothing about his voice and when you just need something to watch for half an hour, Forensic Files does the trick!

Each episode is a remarkable feat of TV programming as they fit a brief synopsis of the crime, the testing and interviews into half an hour. Some cases make you crave more detail and usually the Internet fills in the gaps. Many of the crimes go back to the 60s, 70s and 80s and there's no way that the producers could run updates for hundreds of episodes. The re-enactments can get a little silly and they are nowhere near Unsolved Mysteries quality :-) Unlike a lot of true crime shows, Forensic Files doesn't exploit the crime with flashy graphics or sensationalism. However, occasionally horrible puns did sneak in. The overall video production has aged a little, but dang, that theme song is so memorable.

Hubs shook his head whenever he caught me crafting and watching Forensic Files. A lot of the episodes DO revolve around spousal killings unfortunately. My favourite ones were medical mysteries, however. Two cases memorably revolved around a mold called Stachybotrys.

If anything, watching Forensic Files reminds me that I could have had a very interesting career as a microscopist. When I was younger, I thought forensics involved dead bodies and that's not true. There are so many kind of forensic specialties available. Additionally, it's a reminder that forensics and evidence analysis is a relatively new science with new discoveries to be made all the time.
